I'm curious just what players here think are typically the best or most effective weapon combo and/or combat strategies to use to get ahead in Space Empires 4?

One that typically gets used to the point of ridiculousness is shield depletors and anything that skips armor!

Until everyone starts using Phased Shield generators you can't really go wrong with Phased Polaron Beams until then. They do a decent amount of damage and skip normal shields (which is why it's smart to use armor if you're up against most TDM empires). I've gotten into the habit of always going with the Deeply Religious tech tree to get the Religious Talisman; a device that makes it so your direct fire weapons NEVER MISS. It takes up 50kt as opposed to a mere 10kt of Combat Sensors, but direct fire weapons always hitting no matter what is easily worth it over a mere 65% chance to hit. Also Deeply Religious racial tree has access to buildings that improve your planets system wide as opposed to planet wide like the standard tech trees do.

The other specialty tech trees have strengths of their own. Most Organic Weapons are a joke compared to max-level Anti-Proton Beams, but the Organic Manipulation racial trait grants the Small Electric Discharge which is easily the best Fighter and Troop weapon the game has to offer. They also have Organic armor, which is nice to have but probably outclassed by Scattering or Stealth Armor in some respects.

Crystallurgy has useful buildings like the other specialty trees, but they shine with their Shard Cannons. Max level shard cannons may be slightly less potent than Anti-Proton Beams, but they skip armor so Crystalline weapons are useful against empires that use armor over shields (likely to stop Phased Polaron Beams most TDM empires use).

Psychic Technology has buildings that improve the performance of your ships and fleets, and has the Telekinetic Projector which has a range of 6 and takes up more space than Phased Polaron Beams or Anti Proton Beams, but does more damage and the damage doesn't fall of with range. The Psychic tech tree also grants the Allegiance Subverter weapon, which can capture enemy ships and bases once per combat (has a recharge rate of 30 turns which is the same turn limit as combat). The damage meter shows the likelihood of it capturing an enemy, and does nothing if it misses (so ships that combine the Allegiance Subverter AND the Religious Talisman can be a real pain to deal with). Later in the game most AI empires will be using master computers (you can't script the AI to use living crews once they research them) but and AI empire that uses this strategy (like my Imperium of Man empire) could be a real nuisance to inexperienced human players or poorly-made AI.

And lastly the Temporal Knowledge tech tree has Time-Distortion Bursts which do a decent amount of damage to shields, Temporal Shifters which are arguably a competitor with Null-Space Projectors, and the buildings that tech tree offers. Temporal Knowledge grants the Temporal Space Yard III: the absolute best and fastest space yard the game has to offer. Combine it with a increased rate of Construction Aptitude, Hardy Industrialists, and Engineers culture and you have the ability to spit out ships and units faster than your enemies can destroy them (assuming you aren't running out of resources).
